About Practical Auto
I started writing this because too many car owners get bad advice. Forums, social media, even some shops. Everyone's got an opinion, and half of them are either trying to sell something or repeating what they heard from someone who was trying to sell something.
I've been turning wrenches for over twenty years. Started as a lube tech at an independent shop when I was nineteen, worked my way through brakes, suspension, driveability, and eventually ran the shop floor. I've seen the inside of just about every common vehicle on Canadian roads, and I've made enough mistakes along the way to know what actually matters and what's just noise.
Most of what I know didn't come from textbooks. It came from replacing the same part for the third time on a Tuesday and finally figuring out why it kept failing. It came from customers who couldn't afford the "proper" fix and needed me to find another way. It came from years of figuring out which corners you can cut and which ones will leave you on the side of the road.
Practical Auto is that knowledge written down. No sponsored content, no affiliate links steering you toward products I get paid to recommend. Just straight information about maintaining your car, handling repairs, sourcing parts intelligently, and keeping your ownership costs from spiraling out of control.
I write the way I talk to customers. If something is a waste of money, I'll say so. If a used part is the smart call, I'll tell you that too. If the repair isn't worth doing, you'll hear it here before you hear it from someone who profits from doing the work anyway.
You don't need to know how an engine works to make good decisions about your car. You just need someone willing to explain things plainly, without an agenda. That's what this site is for.
